How costing works
Material costs
Add purchase cost to ingredient/material lots. MakerBatch uses the stock lot that matches each recipe line and works out the used cost.
Product sizes and waste
Cost one sellable size at a time, then save the current prices. Include waste or residue for product left on tools, bowls, piping bags, spills or rejects.
Costed items, labour and utilities
Add jars, bottles, labels, bags and boxes using the original calculator method: cost price, bought amount and amount used. Add hourly rate, sellable items made per hour, utilities percentage and any batch overheads to get a fuller batch cost.
Suggested prices
This follows MakerBatch's original spreadsheet-style costing method: base cost first, then suggested wholesale and retail prices. 2x wholesale, 3.5x retail and 4x retail options are included, with 4x retail selected by default to leave room for offers and discounts. Adjust them for your market, fees, postage, VAT position and business judgement.

Getting started
What MakerBatch is for
MakerBatch helps you follow materials from ordering them, to receiving them, to using them in batches, to selling the finished product.
Start small
You do not need to enter your whole business on day one. Add one real product, a few materials, one batch or received stock item, and one sale or stock movement.
First login guide
If your workspace is empty, MakerBatch shows a simple Start with one thing guide on the Dashboard. It is there to help you choose one small first job, and you can hide it at any time.
1. Add products
Add the products you make or sell, including SKU, size, barcode and label notes if you use them.
2. Add materials
Start in Ingredients. Add stock that has arrived, record ordered materials, or use a starter material list to add planned zero-stock items.
3. Add recipes if needed
Recipes are optional. Makers who do made-to-order items, one-offs or bought-in products can still use MakerBatch without recipes.
4. Record stock and sales
Use Production for items you make. Use Finished stock to receive bought-in products. Record sales and stock movements regularly so your numbers stay useful.
First setup checklist
Quick setup route
Create your account, add one product, add two or three materials, add a supplier lot if you have one, then make or receive one stock batch.
Useful dates
Add use-by, best-before, expiry, opened date or PAO details where they matter. This helps Dashboard and Reports flag items needing attention.
Check your numbers
After entering a batch or sale, check Dashboard, Finished stock, Reports and Trace to see how MakerBatch connects the records.
Good habit
Enter deliveries when they arrive and record sales after markets or craft fairs. Small regular updates are easier than a big catch-up later.
Clearing practice records
When to use it
Use Workspace reset if you added practice records while testing MakerBatch and now want to start properly with real business data.
Where to find it
Open Account in the sidebar, then use Workspace reset. Choose the records you want to clear, such as sales only, recipes only, saved prices, stock history, or everything.
Before clearing
Export a backup first if you may need the records later. Some reset options also clear linked stock, sales and movement records so your traceability stays tidy.
What it does not delete
Workspace reset does not delete your MakerBatch account, login, plan or subscription. It only removes the selected workspace records after you type CLEAR to confirm.
Choose your route
I make products from ingredients or materials
Add materials in Ingredients, add products in Products, add recipes if useful, then use Production to make finished stock.
I buy finished products wholesale
Add products in Products, then use Finished stock to receive bought-in stock. You can still record supplier lots, sizes, barcodes and sales.
I do made-to-order or one-off items
Recipes are optional. Add the materials you use, create a product or item type, then record the finished item and any sale or stock movement.
I am still waiting for ingredients to arrive
Use Ordered material to record what is coming, or add a planned material with quantity 0 so it can be used in recipes before stock arrives.
Key ideas
Planned materials
A planned material has quantity 0. It lets you build recipes or lists before the supplier stock arrives.
Batch and lot numbers
Supplier lots stay with ingredients. Finished batch numbers stay with made or bought-in stock, sales and traceability.
Made vs bought-in stock
Made stock comes from Production. Bought-in stock is received directly into Finished stock and can still be sold and traced.
Reports
Reports show low stock, expiring items, sales summary and printable stock check sheets.
Recipes and batch calculator
Before calculating
Add the recipe ingredients in Ingredients first. They can be real stock lots or planned zero-stock materials, but the names need to match closely.
Recipe batch weight
When making cosmetics, creams, liquids or similar products, enter the total recipe batch weight in g or kg before using Calculate from recipe.
Fixed amount
Use Fixed amount for normal recipe lines, such as 25%, 100g or 2 units.
Variable/default
Use Variable/default for fragrance, colour or optional ingredients. MakerBatch starts with the saved amount, then asks what to use for that batch.
Balance to batch
Use Balance to batch for the base ingredient. MakerBatch calculates it as batch size minus all other recipe lines.
Liquids bought in ml
If stock is held in ml but the recipe is made in grams, MakerBatch uses 1g = 1ml by default. Add density g/ml only if you know it.
Costing calculator
Before costing
Add purchase cost to ingredient/material lots first. Use Edit in Ingredients if the material is already in stock.
Recipe costs
Costing uses your recipe, selected batch size, material lot costs, packaging cost, labour and overheads to estimate a batch cost and cost per unit.
Suggested prices
Wholesale and retail prices are suggestions only. You can adjust final prices for your market, fees, postage, VAT position and judgement.
Correcting mistakes
Wrong ingredient or material details
Use Edit in Ingredients to correct the material name, supplier, supplier lot, unit, quantity, INCI or label details, dates and notes. Linked production records update where possible.
Wrong recipe details or status
Use Edit in Recipes to change the recipe name, version, Draft/Approved/Retired status, reference and notes.
Wrong production batch details
Use Edit in Production to correct batch number, made date, quantity made, product details, expiry date and notes. Finished stock and linked sales update where possible.
Wrong finished stock details
Use Edit in Finished stock to correct bought-in or finished batch details, including batch number, date, product name, SKU, size, barcode and expiry.
Quantity mistakes
Ordered quantities can be corrected. For stock that has arrived, quantities can be corrected as long as they do not go below the amount already used in production.
Common questions
Do I have to use recipes?
No. Recipes are useful for cosmetics, candles, wax melts, baking and repeat products, but you can use MakerBatch with only materials, finished stock and sales.
Can I type 25% instead of 25?
Yes. If the unit is %, MakerBatch accepts 25 or 25% and uses the number for the calculation.
What if I buy liquids in ml but make in grams?
Record the liquid stock in ml. MakerBatch uses 1g = 1ml by default for practical maker calculations, or you can add a density in g/ml if the supplier gives one.
What is the difference between a supplier lot and a finished batch?
A supplier lot comes from the material supplier. A finished batch is the batch number for the product you made or received as finished stock.
Why does an ordered item still show separately?
Ordered materials stay listed until the order is fully received. If you receive only part of an order, the remaining quantity stays on order.
Can I use the same scent from different suppliers?
Yes. Record each supplier and supplier lot separately so the right material is linked to the right recipe, assessment, use or product.
What should I do before importing or deleting anything?
Export a backup first. During early access, ask for help before deleting anything you are not sure about.
Plans and access
Founder access
Founder access is for early paid users. It starts with 14 days free, then the Founder rate while the subscription remains active.
Core and Plus
Core and Plus plan labels are planned for future account levels. At the moment, Founder users get the current early-access app tools.
Free early access accounts
Some early accounts may remain free while MakerBatch develops. Access is managed by MakerBatch admin.
Account help
Signing in
Use the Sign in button in the sidebar. When signed in, records sync to the MakerBatch cloud database.
Password reset
Use Forgot password? on the sign-in pop-up. Reset emails can take a few minutes to arrive. If you request more than one link, use the newest email. Reset links expire after one hour.
Strong passwords
New passwords need at least 10 characters, with uppercase, lowercase, a number and a symbol.
Device and browser security
MakerBatch needs a modern browser and a trusted HTTPS connection. If your browser shows a certificate warning or says the connection is not private, please do not continue or sign in. Update your browser or use another device.
Starting again after testing
Use Account, then Workspace reset, to remove practice records before starting properly.
Closing your account
Contact MakerBatch from your registered email address if you want your account and synced workspace data removed. Export any records you need first.
Label and compliance notes
INCI suggestions
INCI and label suggestions are admin helpers only. Always check supplier documents before using label wording.
Safety documents
For cosmetics and similar products, keep your CPSR, SDS, IFRA, allergen and supplier documents outside MakerBatch as your source of truth.
Early access
MakerBatch is live in early access and still improving. Please report confusing wording, missing features or anything that does not behave as expected.

Add one material, one product, one made or bought-in stock batch, one sale, then check Reports and Trace.

Add a recipe with one Fixed amount line, one Variable/default line and one Balance to batch line, then make a small test batch.
